Roasters in Billings and eastern Montana, by town
Billings
Rock Creek Coffee Roasters roasts in small batches inside its shop at 124 N. Broadway. Revel Coffee roasts to order on a 35 kilo Loring Kestrel. Mazevo Coffee has seven cafes, four of them in Billings. Colter Coffee Roasting is named for John Colter of the Lewis and Clark party, and Ursa Coffee sells one light, one medium and one dark roast plus an espresso.
Red Lodge
Coffee Factory Roasters is a small veteran-owned shop. Elise Mabry works out the roasts on an air roaster and Andy Mabry runs the counter.
Miles City
Kafé Utza roasts single origins in small batches on a custom-built roaster. It has no cafe of its own, but The Ugly Mug brews with its beans.
Garryowen
Wellknown Buffalo is a culture campus on the Crow Reservation near the Little Bighorn Battlefield. Coffee is roasted on site and ground each day for its cafe, and the bags are sold as Crow Clan Coffee.
Bainville
Wild Calf Coffee roasts on a family place on the prairie. Stores across the MonDak region carry its bags.
Eastern Montana's coffee story
Joel and Peggy Gargaro came from California and opened Rock Creek in 2004. Revel grew out of home coffee experiments in 2007. Mazevo began in a garage in January 2016.
Two small-town roasters were bought by people who wanted to stay. The Mabrys bought Coffee Factory so they could live in Red Lodge. Chad and BeKa Phipps, who had run a small coffee shop in Jordan, bought Kafé Utza in the fall of 2021, more than 15 years after it began as a home roasting hobby.
Wild Calf came out of a move home. Dustin Harmon left a job at Boeing near Seattle in 2011 for land his family has held for four generations. He and Sara kept mailing away for Seattle beans, so in 2017 they started roasting their own.
At Wellknown Buffalo, sales fund a Native-led nonprofit on the reservation that runs a food pantry and youth job training. More on that on the support local page.
