Their story
Colter Coffee started in 2003 in Kalispell, in the northwest part of the state. Its current contact details point to a post office box in Billings. The company sells custom blends, organic lots and decaf online, with subscriptions and a wholesale program for businesses.
Colter says every coffee goes through repeated sampling and test roasts before it is offered, and it stresses the role of its staff in roasting, packing and customer service. One unusual item is a White Coffee, pulled from the roaster at about 300 degrees. The company describes the result as mild, sweet and almost tea-like. Its online brewing guide advises whole beans ground just before brewing, filtered water just under boiling, about two tablespoons per six ounces, and keeping beans out of the fridge.
