Coffee in Billings

Billings coffee roasters work at every size, from a downtown shop that roasts inside the store to a roastery that has taken home a Good Food Award. Billings is the largest city in Montana, with 121,239 residents in the Census estimate for July 1, 2025, and three of the Montana roasters we write up are here. Roasters in and near Billings

  • Rock Creek Coffee Roasters, downtown Billings. Joel and Peggy Gargaro moved from California, fell for Montana and opened the business in 2004. They roast in small batches inside the shop at 124 N. Broadway, so the coffee is sold soon after it comes out of the roaster.
  • Mazevo Coffee, Billings. It began in January 2016 as a small roasting setup in the garage of its CEO. Four of its seven cafes are in Billings, and one more is in nearby Laurel.
  • Revel Coffee, Billings. Revel roasts to order on a 35 kilo Loring Kestrel and supplies local cafes, offices and schools. It also makes branded coffee that schools and groups sell to raise money.

Billings' coffee story

Revel founder Gary Theisen started roasting at home in 2007. In 2018 he won a Good Food Award for his Ethiopia Kayon Mountain roast, and in 2022 Food and Wine named him the best roaster in Montana. Several Revel coffees have scored 92 or higher on Coffee Review. (Source: Simply Local Billings.)

Mazevo's first espresso bar opened in early January 2017 at 2719 First Ave. N., across from the Northern Hotel, in a 250 square foot space that used to be a cupcake shop. Owners Damion Taylor and Tyler Nash were 22 and 23 and had grown up together in Glendive. The name comes from a Greek word meaning to gather. (Source: the Mazevo profile.)
