Coffee in Bozeman
Bozeman coffee roasters outnumber those of any other town in the state: the Roast Local directory files more Montana roasters under Bozeman than under Missoula or Billings. Five of the independent roasters we write up roast here, from a Main Street cafe to a wholesale roastery in the Bridger Center. Roasters in and near Bozeman
- Ghost Town Coffee Roasters, Bridger Center. Every bag is roasted at 104 Bridger Center Dr., which also holds a cafe and an in-house bakery. The company is a certified organic handler through the Montana Department of Agriculture.
- Treeline Coffee Roasters, Northside. The Roasting Room at 624 North Wallace is both roastery and cafe, and Treeline roasts in small batches, lighter than industry norms.
- Rockford Coffee, downtown. A small batch roaster and cafe at 18 East Main Street where every coffee served is roasted in house.
- Yellowstone Coffee Roasters, Bozeman Hill Road. Its seasonal Free Range coffee supports the Western Sustainability Exchange.
- Red Bird Coffee, family owned, no cafe of its own. Owners Ron and Helen come in before sunrise each day to roast, and the coffee is poured at Wild Joe's Coffee Spot on West Main Street.
Two more Bozeman names appear in our research. Beacon Coffee Roasters says it took that name after new owners bought International Coffee Traders in 2020. Unrivaled Roasting Co. says on its own site that its coffee is craft roasted in Bozeman, although Roast Local files it under Helena. We have not written profiles for either, and we do not link their sites.
Bozeman's coffee story
The oldest date among the Bozeman roasters we list is 1998, when Tim and Liz Weyer began roasting in a log cabin outside town and named the business Yellowstone Coffee Roasters. Their blends still carry local names such as Big Timber and Big Sky Lift. (Source: the Yellowstone profile.)
Ghost Town came next, in 2006, and built its business on wholesale from the start. It supplies Bozeman cafes, restaurants, grocers, offices and hotels, trains their baristas, and an affiliate called Lamplighter Cafe Services sells and repairs espresso machines. (Source: the Ghost Town profile.)
Treeline began in 2013 as Little Red Wagon Coffee Roasters, a food truck carrying a small San Franciscan SF-6 roaster the team called Francis. It took the Treeline name in 2016 and now roasts on a mint green SF-25 named Beulah. (Source: the Treeline profile.)
