Wild Calf Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Montana: an independent roaster based in Bainville, founded in 2017. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.

Their story

Dustin's family has held the same Montana land for four generations. He left a job at Boeing in the Seattle area and moved home in 2011. He had planned to run his father's cattle herd, but that idea was turned down. Neighbors now lease the ground, and he keeps up its fences and water systems. The name began as a pun on caffeine. It also calls up calves let out of a stall, running simply because they can.

Sara and Dustin Harmon started Wild Calf in 2017, a KFYR report says, roasting and shipping from their own backyard in Bainville. The couple only became serious coffee drinkers while living in Seattle. Once back in Montana they were mailing away for Seattle beans every week and decided to roast their own instead. A 2021 Roundup story describes a German-built 12 kilo roaster that handles up to 22 pounds per batch, with each roast taking about 14 minutes before cooling and destoning.

What they roast

Roast levels run Light-medium, Medium and Dark-medium. House blends include Morning Kick, Run Wild, Plains Drifter, Cattle Baron's Reserve, 5 Wire and Holiday Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Kenya, Ethiopia Guji Natural, Papua New Guinea Wahgi Valley, Brazil Serra Negra, Guatemala Huehuetenango and Honduras Marcala. Decaf: Colombia Decaf. Offerings change with the seasons, so this is what their own pages listed on 2026-09-28.

Where to drink it

Why buying from Wild Calf Coffee matters here

Roasting happens on a family place on the Montana prairie, and orders usually leave within two business days. Its bags are carried by stores across the MonDak region, from Scobey and Plentywood to Wolf Point, Baker and Miles City, and at every Reynolds Market. The Harmons build custom espresso roasts for coffee shops and stands in the area and became certified espresso machine technicians to service them. In 2022 it created a dark roast called Jet Fuel for a local health care provider, sold only through that organization.

Every bag bought from a Bainville roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Montana, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
