Wellknown Buffalo is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Montana: an independent roaster based in Garryowen. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
The campus sits on the Crow Reservation about three miles south of the Little Bighorn Battlefield entrance, with a cafe, gift shop, tipi stays and tours. Coffee is roasted on site and ground each day for the cafe. The menu says the beans are free trade. According to its own telling, the campus grew from a historic site and the vision of an Apsaalooke, or Crow, woman. The site greets visitors with phrases in the Crow language.
The cafe sells its Crow Clan Coffee by the bag and in a 98 ounce box to go. The menu also lists pemmican, a traditional Crow buffalo dish, and promises a free cone to anyone who rides in on horseback.

Sales fund a Native-led nonprofit on the reservation, supporting a food pantry, youth job training and Native artists. The gift shop stocks art, pottery, jewelry and sculpture by artists from many tribes, bought directly from the makers at prices meant to let them earn a living. Visiting Native artists are hosted for short residencies, shows and classes on the campus, which sits on the I-90 frontage road east of Billings near the Little Bighorn Battlefield and the Warrior Trail highway. The campus runs alcohol and drug free, and cafe hours are seasonal, so visitors are asked to call ahead.
Every bag bought from a Garryowen roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Montana, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
