How to pick a holiday coffee gift
The best holiday coffee gift fits how the person already drinks coffee: espresso at home, decaf after dinner, a dark roast on a cold morning. So this guide is sorted by person, not by roaster. Every coffee below was on a Montana roaster's own list when we checked on September 27, 2026. Holiday lists change fast and seasonal lots sell out, so confirm with the roaster before you count on one.

For the one who got an espresso machine last year
Give them a coffee roasted for the machine. These Montana roasters list named espresso coffees:
- Treeline, Bozeman: three espresso blends, Alpenglow, Blackbeard and Rock Me Mama. Buy two and let them compare.
- RamsHead, Shields Valley: Backwoods Espresso, Snowfield Espresso Blend, Vienne's Espresso Blend, and a single origin El Salvador espresso.
- Rockford, Bozeman: its house Espresso Blend of Americas, Africa and Indonesia coffees.
- Drum, Missoula: the Luigi Espresso Blend.
- Hunter Bay, Lolo: Montanaro Espresso.
- Ghost Town, Bozeman: Emerald Espresso.
- Yellowstone, Bozeman: Headwaters Espresso, a dark roast.
- Rock Creek, Billings: an Espresso Blend roasted medium.
Most of these are blends. RamsHead's El Salvador is the single origin espresso on the list, for the person who wants to taste one farm in a shot. Ask for whole bean, so they can grind it as fine as their machine wants.
For the decaf drinker at the holiday table
Give the decaf drinker a decaf roasted to the same standard as everything else on the table. Two Montana roasters we list name their decaf method, and a third names its decaf after one:
- Rockford's Brazil decaf, made by the Mountain Water Process.
- RamsHead's Colombia sugarcane decaf.
- Mazevo's Mellow Creek Swiss Decaf, a medium roast from Billings. Its page did not describe the process when we read it.
More decafs on Montana lists, method not stated: Montana Coffee Traders' Organic Guatemala Decaf, Philipsburg's Colombian Decaf, Hunter Bay's Harmony Decaf, Drum's Decaf Blend and Ghost Town's Chief Joseph Lento. For someone who wants half the caffeine, not none, Treeline roasts a half caff called Dawn to Dusk and Hunter Bay a Half-Calf blend.
For the dark roast fan on cold mornings
Some people want their coffee bold and the same every day. Montana roasters make plenty of dark roasts, and most of them are blends, which keeps the cup steady from bag to bag. These were on their lists:
- Rock Creek's Mike's French Roast, Billings.
- Morning Light's Black Bison Blend, a dark roast of South American and Indonesian coffees, Great Falls.
- Yellowstone's Big Timber, and its organic Buffalo Trail, both dark, Bozeman.
- Montana Coffee Traders' Cafe Monteverde Dark, Whitefish.
- Black Coffee's The Dark, certified organic, Missoula.
- Ghost Town's Chief Joseph Presto, Bozeman.
- Big Creek's Trapper, a medium dark, Victor.
For the one who already has good coffee
Look for a lot they will not find in a store. Treeline's Tropical Sunset was a 2026 Good Food Awards finalist; it is a seasonal single origin, so ask whether any is left. RamsHead listed a Kenya Murang'a AA and an Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Biloya, an anaerobic natural. Ghost Town listed a Colombia Mist Gesha. Each is a coffee from one farm or region, roasted in Montana. For the Montanan who moved away
Send the state in the bag's name. Morning Light roasts a Big Sky Blend, light, of South American and African coffees. Yellowstone's Big Sky Lift is organic and medium dark. Montana Coffee Traders roasts Northern Lights and the '81, named for the year it began. Hunter Bay sells Montana Premium, and Florence Coffee Company sells Montana Reserve, roasted in Butte.

Before you order
- Ask each roaster for its last order date before the holidays. Each roaster sets its own, and we did not find any published.
- Choose whole bean for anyone with a grinder, and ground for anyone without one.
- Buy from the roaster directly when you can. The money pays a roastery in Bozeman, Billings or Missoula instead of a middleman, which is what our support local page is about.
