Quick answer: how fresh is Montana roasted coffee?
Start from the roast date printed on the bag and count forward. A bag roasted in Butte or Bozeman on a Monday has the same shelf life as one roasted anywhere else: by the National Coffee Association's figures, up to three weeks as beans on the counter and up to two once ground. What Montana adds is distance. Wikipedia puts the state at 631 miles across, and the roasters we profile answer that by roasting to order, making several deliveries a week or shipping within a day of roasting.
Montana is big, and its roasters sit in the west
Wikipedia ranks Montana fourth among the states by area, at about 147,000 square miles, and 631 miles from east to west. All 18 roasters we keep full profiles for roast in Billings or somewhere west of it. The Roast Local directory counts 57 independent roasters statewide, so there are others, but the pattern is plain on any map of our list.

How Montana roasters get coffee around the state
Their own pages, as summarized on our profiles, show a few different answers to the distance problem.
- Florence Coffee Company roasts everything in Butte and lists 23 shops, from Bigfork and Whitefish down to the Bitterroot and east to Great Falls. It says it delivers freshly roasted coffee to its wholesale customers every week.
- Hunter Bay roasts in Lolo and sends coffee to its Toole Ave Cafe in Missoula three times a week. It roasts wholesale orders after they are placed.
- Morning Light has roasted in Great Falls since 1989 and says it serves hundreds of businesses around the Northwest each week.
- Red Bird of Bozeman sells through Town and Country stores in eight towns, from Dillon to Lewistown and Billings.
- RamsHead, in the Shields Valley north of Livingston, ships beans within a day of roasting.
- Revel in Billings roasts to order, and Rock Creek roasts small batches inside its North Broadway shop so its coffee sells soon after.
Roasting to order is the pattern that matters most for a shipped bag. The freshness clock starts at roasting, not at the store shelf, which is why the roast date is the first thing to look for on a bag.
The freshness clock
Say a Missoula roaster roasts on Tuesday. However long the bag takes to reach a kitchen in Billings, the window below started on Tuesday, so every day it spends on the road comes out of your drinking time. These are the NCA's figures:

The NCA's advice on quantity is to buy only what you will drink in a week or two. For someone in Great Falls or Kalispell drinking a cup a day, that is about one 12 oz bag every 2 weeks, so a smaller, more frequent order beats a big bag bought on a trip to town. Freshness has a season too
Roasting is the second clock. The first is the harvest. The NCA says most coffee regions have one major harvest a year, and that countries with two flowerings, such as Colombia, have a main crop and a secondary crop. Wikipedia gives two examples of timing: most Brazilian plantations harvest in the dry season from June through September, and around Mbale in Uganda arabica is harvested between August and November.
That is why single origin lists change. On our profiles, Brazil appears on the lists of Rock Creek and Red Bird, whose current coffees are Brazilian peaberry microlots from Bahia. Colombia appears at Ghost Town, Rock Creek, Revel, RamsHead and Philipsburg Coffee Roasters, whose JackLeg is a Colombia, and Hunter Bay sells a Uganda Sipi Falls. A coffee you liked in spring may be gone by fall and back the next year.

How long does roasted coffee stay fresh?
Count from the roast date. The National Coffee Association gives whole beans up to three weeks on the counter and ground coffee up to two, and 3 to 4 months in the freezer. That clock runs the same in Missoula or Miles City; only the trip to your door changes.
Are there coffee roasters in eastern Montana?
None of the 18 roasters we profile roasts east of Billings. The Roast Local directory lists 57 independent roasters in the state, so check its Montana list for towns we do not cover.
Why did my favorite single origin disappear?
Most coffee regions harvest once a year, the NCA says, so roasters rotate single origins as crops run out and new ones come in. Brazil, for example, harvests mostly from June through September, per Wikipedia.
