Coffee in the Bitterroot
Bitterroot Valley coffee roasters line the road south of Missoula. Hunter Bay roasts in Lolo at the mouth of the valley, Big Creek roasts in Victor and pours in Hamilton, and Zaxan Coffee Roasters works out of Hamilton too. Florence Coffee Company, now a chain of shops across western Montana, began as one stand in the town of Florence. Missoula has its own page. Roasters in the Bitterroot and western Montana
Lolo
Hunter Bay Coffee roasts a few miles outside Missoula where the Bitterroot Valley begins, and the plant has run there for more than a decade. Its newest roaster is an Italian STA Impianti machine that the company says made it more efficient.
Victor
Big Creek Coffee Roasters does its roasting and mail orders from a roastery on Highway 93 in Victor. It sells a Roaster's Choice subscription and a Coffees of the World subscription with a six month gift option.
Hamilton
Big Creek's public coffee house is at 301 W Main St. Zaxan Coffee Roasters, established in Hamilton in 2003, runs the Daly Brew cafe inside Bitterroot Health Daly Hospital, according to its own site. Zaxan also appears on the Roast Local Montana list under Hamilton. We have no profile for Zaxan and do not link its site.
Florence, Stevensville and Corvallis
Florence Coffee Company has shops in all three towns. The Florence shop is on US Highway 93 North, and the coffee is roasted in Butte.
The Bitterroot's coffee story
Big Creek began by roasting coffee in a rebuilt garage and selling it out the door. In 2012 the owners opened their first storefront in a historic corner building in downtown Hamilton. The building still has its original 1904 oak floors, and over the years it has held a county law library, a bakery, a steam laundry and a newspaper. (Source: the Big Creek profile.)
Florence Coffee Company started in 2003 in Florence as a single small coffee stand that Rachel, one of the founders, ran herself. The two brothers behind it, Nathan and Jeff, and their wives grew that stand into more than 20 shops. (Source: the Florence Coffee profile.)
