What is single origin coffee?
Single origin coffee is coffee grown in one known place. Wikipedia's Single-origin coffee article defines it as coffee grown within a single known geographic origin, and notes that the place ranges from one farm to a whole country, such as Brazil or Colombia. The label tells you where the coffee grew. How precise that is depends on how much the roaster names.
How big is "one place"?
Single origin covers a ladder of sizes. Each step down names a smaller place and tells you more about the coffee:
- Country: The widest version: "Colombia" or "Sumatra" on the bag, and nothing narrower.
- Region: A named growing area inside a country, such as Huehuetenango in Guatemala or the Guji zone in Ethiopia.
- Cooperative or washing station: Coffee from many small farms, processed together under one name.
- Estate: Wikipedia describes estate coffees as grown on one farm, which can range from a few acres to plantations covering many square miles.
- Microlot: Wikipedia says micro-lot coffees come from a single field on a farm, a small range of altitude and a particular day of harvest.
Coffee shops use the label, Wikipedia notes, to highlight the producer or the coffee's origin, and specialty buyers are drawn to it for the transparency it tries to convey. The same article is candid that a coffee's origin is still hard to verify, though DNA fingerprinting of green beans may make that possible.
What single origin coffee tastes like
Wikipedia credits single origin coffees with characteristics and tastes that blends from multiple origins lack. The taste depends on the place, the plant variety, the processing and the roast, and a lighter roast keeps more of the first three in the cup. See our light roast page for why.
Single origins also change with the harvest. A roaster sells a lot until it runs out, then moves on, so the list you see this month will not be the list next season.
Single origin vs blend vs microlot
| Single origin | Blend | Microlot | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it grew | One known place, country to farm | Two or more origins | One field, one harvest day |
| What the label tells you | The place | The roaster's recipe | The place, narrowed as far as it goes |
| Across the year | Changes with the harvest | Built to stay steady | Small and gone when it sells out |
| Best for | Tasting a place | A dependable daily cup | A coffee you will not see twice |

The ladder on Montana roasters' lists
Montana roasters sell single origins at every step of that ladder. From their own sites, read September 27, 2026:
- Country: Florence Coffee Company in Butte lists a Sumatra, and Philipsburg Coffee Roasters sells JackLeg, a Colombia.
- Region: Big Creek in Victor and Hunter Bay in Lolo both list a Guatemala Huehuetenango.
- Cooperative: Drum in Missoula and Ghost Town in Bozeman both list coffee from Rwanda's Sholi cooperative.
- Estate: Florence's FloCo Costa Rican comes from the Santa Elena Estate in Tarrazu, and RamsHead lists Costa Rica Hacienda La Minita.
- Producer: Revel in Billings lists a natural from producer Israel Degefa in Ethiopia's Guji zone.
- Microlot: Red Bird in Bozeman sells Brazilian peaberry microlots from Bahia, and RamsHead says it specializes in high end microlots.
These are what the roasters listed, not what any club box will hold. The coffee grew far away, but the roasting, the buying and the paychecks are in Butte, Lolo, Missoula and Billings. Buying single origins from them keeps that work in Montana; read why local roasters matter.
