Coffee in Kalispell

Kalispell coffee roasters are a small group. The Bird and Billy hand roasts single origins in small batches downtown, and Colter Coffee Roasting says it was established in Kalispell in 2003. Montana Coffee Traders, which roasts just south of Whitefish, opened a Kalispell cafe back in 1992. Kalispell had 31,851 residents in the Census estimate for July 1, 2025. Montana Coffee Traders, south of Whitefish

Montana Coffee Traders sources and roasts arabica coffees, with certified organic and fair trade options. Its roastery is just south of Whitefish on Highway 93, and the Whitefish page has its story.

Florence Coffee Company also runs a shop in Kalispell, as one of its 23 across western Montana, but its coffee is roasted in Butte. The Roast Local Montana list has a few more Kalispell roasters that we have not checked, so we leave them unnamed.

Kalispell's coffee story

Montana Coffee Traders opened its Kalispell cafe in 1992, eleven years after the company began roasting near Whitefish. The Daily Inter Lake told that story in 2021, when the company marked its 40th year.

Colter Coffee Roasting was established in Kalispell in 2003. The Bird and Billy roasts inside its own downtown coffee house, a family business from roaster to counter.

The 1992 cafe is not on Montana Coffee Traders' list today. Its site names three cafes: the one at the roastery south of Whitefish, one in downtown Whitefish and one in Columbia Falls. For coffee roasted in Kalispell itself, the names to know are The Bird and Billy and Colter.

These are family and hometown businesses. Every bag bought from a Kalispell roaster keeps a roasting job and a counter job in the valley, and that is the reason to buy local when you can.
